snoopy10. Successfully negotiated from my position of “Green Beans or Carrots” to “OK, Corn with a little butter”. He just might become a lawyer.

9. Used a 3×5 Post-It pad to make a Picture Book. I may have it laminated.

8. Asked me to color in his Picture Book. I drew a race car, a tree, and he did the sky and the grass. Can I get Chip Foose to teach me to draw a car?

7. Told me he didn’t want to see “Star Trek”, so I saw it alone, and I’m glad I did; he wouldn’t have liked it.

MOVIE SPOILER: They totally lost me with the time-travel cr@p. Scotty became chief engineer on the flagship of Starfleet ten seconds after working on an ice planet? Spock and Uhura? But on the other hand, the Orion girl made up for all of that.

6. Told me he did want to see the new Transformers movie. But it’s not out yet, so we’re going to go see “Up“. Pixar, don’t fail me now!

5. Told me that he’d pay for us to see “Up” in 3D because, “We can just use my money! I have $9 bajillion, kajillion dollars! You can have as much as you want!” Perhaps I should see him about a low-interest car loan.

4. Ate one cupcake and didn’t ask for another. Until breakfast on Saturday.

3. Talked to his mother on iChat video for 30 minutes. At night he gets very cranky and isn’t always pleasant, but he was exceptionally kind and talkative and made everybody feel great.

2. Wrestled with me on my bed, fell off a lot, giggled when he landed on the pillow, the bed, the floor, the dog, the bench at the foot of the bed, and the TV remote control.

1. He went right to bed at 8pm. Played cars for 30 minutes, fell asleep with the lights on, didn’t wake up when I turned them off at 9pm. He didn’t wake up when I checked on him at 10pm, 11pm, and midnight.

Sounds like you had a blast on Friday!

  2. Alex says:

Fun! Find it more enjoyable to grind rep with the family than Wyrmrest? :P

  3. Skraps says:

I remember those days with my kid. He is 14 now, so a good day with him is a day that doesn’t end in “I hate you”. Ok as far as teen-aged kids go he is way easier than the girl was.

The cool think is, because I live in the same town I grew up in, I still am in contact with high-school friends. We got together last weekend and played D&D. But this time we played with the boy, because I feel like I would be a bad dad if I sent him off to high school with out a firm back ground in pen-n-paper rpg’s.

  4. Clioratha says:

Sounds like a wonderful day grinding rep with Son :)

And Skraps has the right idea also – my 10 year old daughter has been playing AD&D for about 2 years now with us – the world needs more gamer girls. (Now if she would just get her death knight in WoW up to 60 so i can transfer it off my account to hers and make my own DK!)

  5. Chris says:

    You are one good father

  6. Vienne says:

Ah, a word of warning about Up. My roomie went and saw it yesterday, and she’s a major Disney/Pixar fan, and she came back really angry and demanding we watch something funny.

She said it was a pretty depressing movie all-around and had a good inkling of violence in it. You might look up some reviews about it beforehand. (I don’t know how old your son is.)

  7. Sounds like the two of you have been living it up. Just out of curiosity, how old is your son? I could have sworn you’ve mentioned it in a previous post either here or on BRK but I can’t seem to recall it.

Also, WTB tips for getting a four year old girl to actually go to sleep at a decent time when I have her on the weekends? Anyone?

  8. girliegeek says:

Woooo boys night!!!! Glad you enjoyed yourself because you deserve it!!

    Lots of love,

Here is an excellent review of UP. There is a section of about 3-4 paragraphs of spoilers in the middle, that are marked as such. dont read those. The rest of the review is great.

  10. Mitch says:

I’m jealous. I wish my dad made me picture books =P

  11. Constantinehl2 says:

You are a great father and doing a great job no matter what!!!I hope to do the same progress with you in the future with my kids.Smile :) life is beautifull and she will smile back to you eventually.

  12. Palladiamors says:

http://www.spill.com is another good review site. The boys there tend to tell it pretty straightforward, and you can usually find one of the four who has a similar attitude to yours. The movie does deal with some seriousness, but from all accounts I’ve heard so far is a very, very good Pixar film. To each their own, I suppose.

  13. Midnitemoo says:

Excellent on the boytime, Mr. Brk. Will you be BRK’ing again in the future? Enquiring minds want to know.

  14. GamerGirl says:

Awesome! Sounds like he’s a smart kid. Sounds like you’re an awesome father too! I’m glad the ichat is working out for you guys. I’m not sure if I’m going to go see the new star trek. I’m afraid that after being raised on that stuff by my father (11pm star trek after the 10pm MASH and on from there with all the other reincarnations) that I just would be lost and let down.

  15. BRK, your son sounds adorable. I wish I could meet the two of you.

  16. Marylin says:

That sounds like a great friday, with a great kid. :)

  17. Aaron W says:

Up was awesome, saw it today. On the same level as Cars and Wall-E, but nothing can touch their earlier stuff in my book.

  18. LazzieLong says:

Up was a great movie. Saw it with my 6yo. It was a bit of a tear jerker in some spots, but great non the less. Even worth it to see it in 3D. (Yes with the glasses and everything)

  19. Dewald says:

Damn, I wish my dad showed as much interest in my life…

You’re one great father Dan – all the best!! You are a walking talking example of the “when life throws you lemons, make lemonade!” philosophy!

P.S no more movie spoilers please, I still need to see Star Trek…

  20. Joe says:

  21. Tobi-Wan says:

Seems like he’s a lucky boy.

  22. kunukia says:

Kids are good times…just a warning, it is harder to have fun and love them so wholeheartedly when they are teenagers…girls can get downright mean at about 14, and it is a little older with boys. A few years of THAT is what makes being a parent challenging. Thank goodness most of them come through and get sweet again, and it is a whole new relationship, more grownup, and also very precious.

  23. Delicia says:

If you both have already seen Night At The Museum #1, then I recommend seeing #2.. my 10 yr old daughter was laughing so hard at one point I thought she’d fall out of her seat. The new ‘bad guy’ is hilarious.

  24. Midnitemoo says:

Don’t listen to Delicia, for she is EVIL, and serves bad pie!

  25. Tom says:

I totally agree about Star Trek movie. I think they totally stuffed a great opportunity to make something orginal in Trek. A rare thing! I was totally disapointed.

  26. Pogue says:

Oh noes you’ve taught him to talk… your first mistake… I promise you will regret it one day… :)

  27. Three of IV says:

Sounds like a good weekend in my book. My son was born almost a year ago. The Big 1 coming up in July, I am SOOO looking forward to having fun days like that.

  28. Guy says:

    ^^——<—– =D

  29. Macbane says:

He sounds like a Very Happy, Sweet Kid, and that’s a huge credit to you and his mother. I’m sure that however it goes, both of you will do your best to keep him as happy as he is now.

  30. Pidge says:

Good on you — sounds like a great Friday for making memories!

Agree on Star Wars too. A wonderful storytelling opportunity squandered. The result was fun and action-y but totally forgettable. With the time travel hook, I just filed the whole thing under “alternate timeline,” making it easier to stop thinking about all the plot holes.

My four and eleven-year-old both liked UP. Not a side-splitter but funny and heartwarming. There’s some poignant stuff in there on what defines a life well-lived that’s clearly aimed at adults.

And definitely hear you on the late night grumps. Both of mine had only three speeds when younger: overdrive, system overload and crash. :)

  31. John says:

That’s awesome :) Sometimes it really is the little things that add up to making a great day. Keep your chin up and enjoy every minute of it!

  32. Russell says:

I saw “Up” the other day (in 3D, no less), and it was fantastic. I highly recommend it.

    Heartwarming!

  36. Michael says:

I agree on your points about Star Trek… I was confused by the huge red ball of doom… Why do you need such a huge red ball if dropplet of it destroys an entire planet… Was Spock looking forward to destroying a whole bunch of planets???

Up made me cry three times (And I am a manly man damnit)… was one of the better Pixar movies in some time…

  37. Very originative, one of the courteous sites I have realised today. Take care of the nice work.
