insigniaDADDY!

Yes kiddo?

DADDY!

What’s up?

DADDY!

/sigh, walks into the family room

Hey, what’s the problem.

I CAN’T WATCH AIRBUD. IT’S BROKEN.

Hmm. The DVD isn’t syncing with the receiver. Let me take a look…

/disassembles the entire audio-video system, replaces cables, cleans the DVD, tries it in another player and it works fine, cleans the cables, cleans the connections on the receiver and player, hooks it all back up

DADDY!

It’s not working?

NO.

OK, I’ll see what the budget has to say about getting a cheap, new DVD player.

RIGHT NOW?

No, not now.

HOW AM I GOING TO WATCH AIRBUD?

Well, you can watch in my room…

I CALL YOUR SPOT ON THE BED!

You watch the movie, I’ll do some research into a new DVD player.

“Hey Daniel!”

Hey Brain.

“You realize what this means?”

What, Brain?

“You can buy a Blu-Ray DVD player and I can feast on 1080p video!”

No, you cannot. We are on a strict budget and are not going to blow $300 on a Blu-Ray DVD player for the family room.

“Not for the family room; for your bedroom!”

But… my DVD player in the bedroom works just fine.

“Daniel. Move your bedroom DVD player to the family room, buy a Blu-Ray DVD player and put that in your bedroom!”

Your idea intrigues me…

“And since you subscribe to NetFlix, you will be able to stream on-demand movies to your TV, not just your computer.”

Fascinating…

“You don’t even have to buy any cables; it’s all the same optical audio and HDMI cables that you already have.”

Your argument has merit…

“And look! Here’s an LG Blu-Ray DVD player for $249!”

Your argument just sank; we can only spend $100. At that price-point we can get a perfectly good replacement DVD player for the family room so the boy can watch AirBud out there.

“Alright alright alright… lemme think.”

You do that.

“I need control of Hands.”

Enjoy.

“Cmon Hands! We’ve got research to do!”

/typity typity typity

Whatcha doing, Brain?

“I have accessed our BestBuy rewards account…”

We have one of those?

“And now we’re looking at coupons…”

BestBuy has coupons?

“And now we’re printing a coupon!”

What kind of coupon?

“An Insignia NS-BRDVD3 Blu-Ray DVD player, with BD Live, and access to NetFlix streaming movies for $99!”

No way.

“Total way!”

Insignia?

“BestBuy house brand; LG and Panasonic parts.”

It says we need our rewards card. I don’t have that.

“Check the printer! I just printed a temp card!”

Does our local BestBuy have any of ‘em in stock?

“According to the web site, they do.”

So a $100 Blu-Ray DVD player with BD Live and access to NetFlix streaming movies, it’s not a knockoff or made from Tinker Toys, and it’s just plug-and-play into my existing system?

“As you used to say, ‘Foshizzle!’”

Keys?

“Keys.”

Wallet?

“Wallet.”

Traveling music?

“Santana.”

Blog post?

“Writing it right now.”

I guess we’ll have to tell everybody how it turns out?

“Undoubtedly.”

ok.. so this is my total non-geekery showing here.. but are the OLD DVD’s playable in the new Blu-Ray DVD players? or do I have to replace my ENTIRE collection?

  2. mohgreen says:

never mind answered my own questions by visiting the bestbuy site :D

  3. Klinger says:

    YAY! Off to Best Buy!

You MUST tell me how your kid does in that store. My little guy is only 4 months right now and I’m hoping he’s as much a geek as I am.

I could spend hours at electronics stores when I was little…. didn’t even need to buy… just look and play the demos.

  4. CJ says:

Brain…you should have made him spend an extra 150 and bought a PS3.
I just broke down and bought one. I don’t have any games, but I now have a sweet media server/blu-ray player. Can stream hulu, netflix, crackle, espn, etc. I’m cancelling Direct TV at the end of the month for 3 months to recoup the cost. If it works out…meaning if my wife can stand it….we’ll just put that $100/month to some other use.

Oh well…advice is too late. Enjoy the sweetness of your new Blu-Ray player!

  5. Gret says:

Just one quick question: it doesn’t have a DTS decoder, what about the DTS soundtracks on the blu-rays?
    Greets from Hungary:)

  6. TC says:

eerie… I saw the title in my feed reader, and instantly remembered that I wanted to check out that deal I saw on my latest round of netflix envelopes… So New tab… check it out… come back and read post. Same deal. Kinda weird… ok not really, but I’m getting one too.

Brain may be a little silly sometimes, but this was brilliant.

    Ego should be taking notes.

    <3 Brain
    I WANT ONE!

  9. Jamison says:

Good thing Brain saved you all that money on the Blu-Ray player. Now you can blow $150 on new amazing looking Blu-Ray discs :)

  10. Saphia says:

And to think my husband badgered me over weeks to get a PS3 for the blu-ray player because it was good and you get that and a game system in ONE! And we just got it last week. grumble grumble

  11. Veronica says:

Best Buy and I are not the good friends. Every time my husband goes in there Best Buy tries to keep him and usually succeeds for a few hours. I have to admit, though, this was a great find. Hope it works out for you!

  12. Druff says:

    Thank you sir.
Been wanting to get a new DVD player. Just got a new 37″ HD tv. This looks like a much better idea.

  13. Delicia says:

Happy to hear you were able to swing it, enjoy the new toy!

  14. Leejin says:

As a part time.. “I have to work this second job at best buy to pay for ma mortgage” best buy employee, I fully endorse this product. However, the “Lg, and panasonic” parts isn’t ENTIRELY true. A few times, the LCD’s and dvd players have been reputable guts. But sometimes they’re made by Funai, Daewoo, et cetera.. make sure to have your salesperson look up in RSS to see who the manufacturer is. Legally they can’t tell you, but if you have a cool salesman.. Tell them you are the blogger formerly known as BRK, they’ll go APE $H!*… they’ll help you out man.. GL

Thanks Daniel & Brain! Thanks to this information, I was able to convince my wife to get me this for my birthday. Now I have a Blu-ray player connected to the TV we use more frequently.
