No, I Don’t Think It Is

IMG_1075
A Smart car with a vanity plate that says G0 STFU. It’s bad enough you drive a car my son could squash with his Big Wheel, but you’re going to taunt me into wanting to crash into you?

Is that really “smart”?

An old friend of mine got our DMV to allow: SFSUSCSKS
He got it thru initially by turning it into some acronym for some made-up sports club he ‘belonged’ to.

Took ‘em about 2-3 years before they made him change it.

I actually had one of these enclosed golf carts pass me on the highway… in my defense, I was in the exit lane at the time, and there was a lot of traffic.. but I still felt weak and pathetic at the time.

  3. Davy says:

Don’t you just wish you had a Hummer for times like this?

    RAMMING SPEED!!!!!! :)

  5. Gimmlette says:

Is it classified as a mount or as a vanity pet?

  6. Rick says:

You continually amuse me. you really should take that show on on the road. Like you I guit WoW. I miss it to be honest but I am enjoying the opportunity to pick up a habit that doesn’t involve sitting in front of the compuiter for hours at a time, In my case Photography.

Maybe he’s just a big fan of Southern Tip of Florida University?

  8. Bigguss says:

What is it with Americans and their intense hate of small cars? Smart cars are economical, safe and actually very fun to drive.
You don’t have to own a car that has its own time zone and costs a small countries GDP to run, for it to be fun you know.

  9. Thomas says:

My sister drives one of those. It is a great little urban vehicle for the cramped medieval city centres in Europe. It does Ok on short commuter style trips on the freeway as well. But yea… it was never meant as a roadtrip kind of car. It has also found an enthusiast following when retrofitted with a Suzuki Hayabusa engine as seen here. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CdJ84nho3_k

  11. gloonor says:

heh, I drive an 18 wheeler for a living. I see one of those things and the thought that usually pops into my head is please don’t be stupid enough to cut me off. 80,000 lbs making contact with one of those things and it’s history, along with whoever was crazy enough not to give me the proper space. crumple zone? the whole car is a crumple zone for the car in front of it.

Aw, Mindranor got in before me. And was able to think of a legitimate-sounding University, too. All I could come up with was Star Trek Federation University.

  14. XI says:

I would take that more seriously than if it were on some giant penis extension. Its very possible that they have nothing to prove, and could kick some ass. ie, Boy named Sue….

  15. Polo says:

I am going to need some help here.
I am french and therefor am totaly missing the joke.
Can anyone tell me what STFU stands for?

And yeah, I see this vehicule more for people to lazy to ride a bike ^^

  16. Ben says:

Sorry for the youngest and those with a frail heart, but being part french makes me want to explain to him what it means. STFU = Shut the fuck up.

  17. Willow says:

    *gigglesnort* Bit defensive, aren’t they?

  18. Kayeri says:

::watching my husband laugh so hard his face turns red as he collapses over the keyboard, then begins choking on his laughter as he reads this::

When he could talk again, he said, “Boy do I want the 4-wheel-drive pickup truck from hell just to steamroller him.”

  19. Kevin says:

Maybe it’s just because I’m so generous with the benefit of the doubt, but I would’ve interpreted the plate as “Yeah, I got talked into this back when gas hit $5 a gallon with no sign of stopping, and now I’m REALLY tired of being asked about it.”

  20. CT says:

@Bigguss; Its not that we have an intense hate of small cars. Just an extreme dislike of glorified golf carts being called road worthy vehicles.

  21. Polo says:

    Now that makes sense.

Thanks Ben. (and excuse me for making you say bad words)

  22. Skraps says:

    @Bigguss

What a lot of people in European countries do not realize is how BIG the US is. There are not a lot of small cramped roads originally designed for horse and buggies. In cities like like Boston, New York and San Francisco. These smaller cars are awesome, and if I lived in one of those places I would so have one. But in rural areas they are impractical. I could not fit a weeks worth of groceries plus my 2 kids in a smart car, and shopping every day for food etc is not possible. (Not for me mind you, i live in suburban hell with a wal-mart on every corner) But I also drive a Volkswagen GTI. The wife on the other hand, drives a smaller SUV. But she is also a shop teacher, ( I know a female shop teacher, who’d of thunk it) and she tows a utility trailer regularly for lumber buys etc. So her use of the SUV is somewhat justified.

  23. William says:

I went and visited their production facility in Europe over the summer, and have to say all in all I was very impressed with both the facility and little car. It is definitely a niche market item. I have to say the sport model does look fairly good considering how small it is.

General Disclosure: I live in rural Texas, I drive a truck (F-150), and every weekend I haul a few tons of hay in the form of round bales.

  24. Bigguss says:

    @Skraps

I am aware of how big the US is, but i would hazzard a guess that the average American drives similar mileage to a European?

I’m not saying that the Smart car is an appropriate in every situation. If you have a family or have to haul lots of things around, then of course its not appropriate to own. But for most commuter types I.E single driver on a short journey they are absolutely fine.

Having said all of that, i am a huge fan of American cars and would love to spin around the back streets of south east England in a Ford Mustang.

  25. Mahon says:

    > I am aware of how big the US is, but i would hazzard a guess that the average American drives similar mileage to a European?
Nope, American people litterally live in their cars, I remember my time there as the time I got arrested because I chose to take a walk along the road and the police found that behaviour suspicious…

  26. Matt says:

    Fuel consumption*
    City/highway (mpg) 33/41 (EPA 2009)
    That’s from their website.
It’s a 1.0 liter engine. Am I impressed? Not really.
Buy a Honda, get a trunk and a back seat. Be able to take more than one person with you.
It also says it takes 12.8 seconds (0-60mph)
If you have a watch on right now…count off 12 seconds for me. Then laugh and say.. “WOW THAT’S SLOW”.
Forgive me, Smart Car owner if I pass you on the on ramp and give you the finger. Your car is slow and you paid too much for it.

  27. Warren says:

Saw one of these sitting the a parking lot just this week. I think they are kinda cool.

  28. Jim says:

Get two of them. When they run out of gas you have a set of roller skates.

  29. William says:

My brothers co-worker was killed while driving and ’smart’ car last month after he hit a deer. Smart is the new dangerous, apparently.

  30. Dobmeister says:

@Shagrat: I do believe Achmed was referring to a Honda Prius rather than the smart car when he made that comment.

Smart cars are awesome. Don’t diss. I’d drive one myself if they weren’t so much on the unaccommodating side for a 6′2″ individual.

  31. Shagrat says:

@Dobmeister-I’m well aware of the context of the original quote, I was using it out of context to describe the Smart car.

  32. Sarissan says:

“my honor student could beat up your honor student” now becomes “my car could squish your smart car”

  33. Steve says:

I drove a smart car in Italy for two weeks. It was a blast. It easily took two adults and all our luggage everywhere we wanted to go, and we drove a lot, including on the autobahn. I think the top speed was about 80 mph, but I really didn’t have any problems with it. It was stupidly easy to park, too.

I can’t speak to the crashworthyness of them, as I didn’t crash mine; and I don’t give a lot of credence to anecdotes of their deadliness – real safety statistics from a reliable source are another matter.

I do know it was a lot of fun to drive and it hauled a lot more cargo than I ever would have thought.

Oh, BTW, I’m 6′1″ and had plenty of leg and head room.

    Steve

  34. Omikron says:

You understand that a Smart Car is basically a rollcage on wheels. Your 350z would be crushed before the smart car ever gave in.
