My son is now reading his books after I read to him. We have a routine that we read two chapters of his Magical Treehouse series every night, but now he’s starting to read a third chapter after I leave his room. Yes I have to get more books, but what a price to pay.
——
“Sammy, who’s your friend?”
“DADDY YOU KNOW THIS IS ABBY.”
“Is she going to take off her shoes and get the sand out of them like you are?”
“ABBY DOES WHAT I DO SO YES.”
“She does what you do?”
“YES.”
“So what do you do?”
“I TAKE CARE OF HER. WHEN SHE FALLS DOWN I PICK HER UP. AND SOMETIMES I LET HER CATCH ME BUT NOT ALWAYS, ‘CAUSE I’M FASTER THAN SHE IS.”
——
“Sammy, do you want to listen to some music as we drive to Home Depot?”
“YES PLEASE.”
“What would you like to hear?”
“SANTANA!”
And I crank on some Santana and he groves to it, even singing along, as we cruise along in the 350Z.
——
“Look kiddo, Grandma and Grandpa brought you some presents!”
“DADDY WE SHOULD DO SOMETHING NICE FOR THEM TOO.”
——
“DADDY WHY DON’T I GET A ‘Food Collection’ PATCH LIKE THE OTHER CUB SCOUTS?”
“Because we were moving that Saturday and couldn’t go out and collect food.”
“OK. BUT NEXT WEEK CAN WE COLLECT FOOD?”
——
“DADDY I’M HUNGRY!”
“Here’s dinner!”
“WHAT’S FOR DINNER DADDY?”
“Steak, corn, and fruit cocktail!”
/INHALES!
——
“DADDY I CLEANED UP THIS AISLE!”
“Sam-o, I don’t think Bed Bath and Beyond wants you cleaning up the napkin rings…”
“BUT THEY WERE ALL A MESS! NOW THE COLORS ARE ALL IN THE RIGHT BINS.”
——
“Sammy, you will behave while I’m out and you’re visiting your new friends, yes?”
“I WILL BE A VERY NICE GUEST, DADDY. CAN I PLAY MARIO GALAXY?”
“Yes you may. You can even have a treat if they offer one.”
“I WILL USE MY NAPKIN AND NOT MY SHIRT.”
Great! Um… would you do that at home, too?”
“PROBABLY NOT DADDY.”

LOL that’s awesome!! My son is in cub scouts too and just got a bunch of patches, although I’m still waiting for him to do his good deed. We went into Wawa (it’s a convenience store here in the Northeast), and I held the door open for him as well as another lady…well, he just went plowing through the second door and let her open it herself…his response? “hehe, I didn’t see her!”
But Sammy seems to be a very well behaved little guy and you’re doing a great job with him! Keep it up!
Oh your lil guy is so sweet! I hope mine turn out like him.
Nice.
My favorite is the last one

Food for thought.
I think you would be an awesome contributer to wired magazine’s geekdad blog.
Your kid is too cute.
Sounds like you have a great little boy.
“I LET HER CATCH ME BUT NOT ALWAYS, ‘CAUSE I’M FASTER THAN SHE IS.”
Hehe
Sooner than you think, he’ll be slowing down and “letting” her catch him alot more often.
ROFL! Thank you for that!
No wonder you’re bragging, he seems to be a great kid!
Reading about the stuff your son does and says is great! My kids are much the same (7 yr old twins and 3 yr old) and the things they say and do just make you stop and marvel sometimes. Your “bragging” makes me feel like less of an odball when i “brag” about my kids, too! Glad that things seem to be moving along as good as they can be, Daniel.
sounds nice, good to hear he’s taking such an intrest in reading. Atl least he was honest and not just saying what you wanted him to hear.
Love that last one.
“PROBABLY NOT DADDY.”
Priceless. =)
Its a good thing if he’s reading after your done… So hard to hook boys onto reading… =)
Love,
Amoon
I love it! Thanks for sharing this stuff! I love to read it and so precious that is now recorded. I think I must have had quite a few moments like that with my kids but I can’t remember very many. For example . . . I remember almost lmfao’ed when I had to say “Quit licking the screen!” It was just the back door screen . . . but why on earth was he licking it? and it just sounds so weird.
btw–had an awesome time in FL. That November weather was perfect. I suppose next time I come in November (maybe next year for the harry potter/universal thingy) there will really be a hurricane. But at least the lines will be short!
Your posts about your son make me want kids someday. Thanks for that.
The exchanges between you and your soon read like something from “All I Need To Know, I Learned In Kindergarten”. It was wonderful. You have a great son.
You should definately release a small book of these. I reckon that would be full of win. Especially for young families.
Thank you for making me smile.
I adore your stories about your son, and that’s saying quite alot, as I’m typically not a kids person.
Keep up the blogs- they are fantastic!
Your son is, of course, made of Awesome
I enjoy all of your posts, but the ones with your son are pure gold!
